Nature Positive Cities of the Future
Speculative Design for Cities of the Future
Speculative Design Vision Workshop
A leading service design firm in Tokyo brought a delegation to San Francisco for a cultural design exchange. The objective was to investigate how urban living must evolve to meet the challenges of profound climate instability.
The Regenerative Logic
We facilitated a workshop comparing the future visions and climate risks of both Tokyo and San Francisco. This analysis allowed participants to see their home contexts through a new lens of systemic vulnerability and opportunity. We focused on why nature restoration is a strategic imperative for city health and explored how urban-natural interdependencies can be rebuilt. We ran three specialized breakout sessions:
Nature Positivity: Strategies for biodiversity restoration and the essential value of nature as urban infrastructure.
Human Well-being: Redesigning cities for optimized health and equity if we get it right in the future.
Technology and Collaboration: Utilizing new collaborative forms and digital tools to enable restoration and resident well-being despite environmental flux.
The Shift
The workshop provided the delegation with an expanded framework for urban innovation. By moving from reactive planning to speculative design, participants developed a deeper capacity for long-term visioning. The result was a refined strategic roadmap prioritizing restorative urban environments where technology and nature work together to ensure residents can flourish.
